Martinez
Old Tom gin, sweet vermouth and maraschino - the ancestor of the Martini and Manhattan.

- 1 ½ ozSweet vermouth
- ¼ ozMaraschino liqueur
- 2 dashesOrange or Angostura bitters
Method
- Stir all ingredients with ice until chilled.
- Strain into a chilled coupe and garnish with an orange twist.
History
Straddling the martini-manhattan family is the Martinez. It was one of the earliest evolutions of the Manhattan into the martini, swapping out whiskey for gin but keeping the sweet vermouth and adding maraschino liqueur. In fact, chronologically it predates the dry martini by probably at least a decade or two, although for classification purposes we are categorizing it as a variation of the dry martini. The use of Old Tom gin along with the sweeter vermouth and liqueur gives a flavor profile closer to that of a Manhattan than a martini, and while ordered less often, it remains a staple cocktail of bartending knowledge.
Old Tom gin is more accessible than genever these days, and London dry gin won't cut it (the taste will be too dry to mix with the sweet vermouth). But because the recipe has changed so much over the years, feel free to play with the ratios and vermouth types to achieve the balance you prefer.
