Gibson

A Martini garnished with a cocktail onion instead of an olive or twist.

Ingredients

  • 2 ½ ozLondon dry gin (or vodka if preferred)
  • ½ ozDry vermouth

Method

  1. Stir with ice until very cold and strain into a chilled martini glass.
  2. Garnish with a cocktail onion.

History

It's unclear how this drink started, but its first known publication occurred in the 1908 book, The World’s Drinks And How To Mix Them by William Boothby. It was a unique martini at the time in that it removed bitters (at the time, martinis had a dash of orange bitters). Later on, the garnish was also changed from olives or lemon twists, to pickled onions.
