Ingredients

  • 2 ½ ozLondon dry gin (or vodka)
  • ½ ozdry vermouth
  • ½ ozolive brine

Method

  1. Add the spirit, vermouth and olive brine to a shaker filled with ice and shake for 15-20 seconds until well-chilled (or stir in stirring glass).
  2. Double strain into a chilled martini glass.
  3. Garnish with skewer of olives.

History

The dirty martini was seen as early as 1901, with some New York bartenders muddling olives into the classic dry martini. Although the preference for dry martinis continued through the century, some drinkers (famously President FDR) preferred the olive brine variation more. In the 2000s, the drink has resurged in popularity, resulting in it becoming a staple at bars all around the world. It is also uniquely acceptable as a shaken OR stirred cocktail - most true martinis are only stirred.
