History
In the mid-20th century, some bartenders began playing around with the idea of using muddled fruit (usually cherries or oranges) in whiskey old fashioneds. This became mainstream for a few decades until the revival of craft cocktails interest in the '90s pushed a return to the "classic" old fashioned of lore. Wisconsin, however, begged to differ and retained the muddled fruit recipe. It also switched out whiskey for brandy and topped the cocktail with lemon-lime soda. The result is now a regional classic known as the Wisconsin Brandy Old Fashioned. Most bars will not typically offer this but a seasoned bartender will know how to if asked.
