History

Rum variants of the old fashioned began emerging as early as the 1940s although they remained highly niche and preferred far less than their whiskey originals. In the 1990s-2000s, craft cocktail interest began surging and bartenders began experimenting more liberally with the use of dark spirits in the classic cocktail formulas, giving rise to the rum old fashioneds.

Importantly, dark rum works best with dark sugars (e.g. demarara syrup) and therefore changes recipe proportions somewhat. Spices may be added and even alterations to bitters (e.g. chocolate or blackstrap bitters) can work.
