- Express an orange peel over the drink and drop it in.
History
Did you know, the word "cocktail" did not always refer to the group of mixed drinks we enjoy imbibing today. It used to define a very specific elixir: spirit + sugar + bitter. What we call the "Old-Fashioned" today was described in print in the early 1800s as the "cocktail", then renamed "old-fashioned" by drinkers who wanted it made the old way as fancier mixed drinks arrived (then-called "improved whiskey cocktails"). Old Fashioned purists disdain the concept of using a non-whiskey spirit as a base, but the Old Fashioned is really a template for many derivatives. As such, the drink can be easily riffed-on and work very well.
