History

The Jack Rose cocktail was created around the turn of the 20th century, likely in New York or New Jersey. The drink’s base spirit was most probably Laird’s Applejack, made in New Jersey at the oldest licensed distillery in the U.S. It was a known favorite of John Steinbeck and Ernst Hemingway, even going so far as to make it into the latter's 1926 book “The Sun Also Rises.” David Embury also included it as one of six basic drinks bartenders should know in his book “The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks”, published in 1948.
