Final Ward

One of the more famous Last Word variants, substituting rye for gin and lemon for lime

Ingredients

  • ¾ ozrye
  • ¾ ozGreen Chartreuse
  • ¾ ozMaraschino liqueur
  • ¾ ozFresh lemon juice

Method

  1. Shake all ingredients with ice.
  2. Double-strain into a chilled coupe.
  3. Express lemon twist over drink and discard. Then garnish with brandied cherry skewer

History

This Last Word riff was famously created in 2007 by bartender Phil Ward (of Mayahuel fame) at Death & Co. in NYC. It is a very simple swap of rye whiskey for the gin, and lemon juice for lime. In that sense it is also a variation of the whiskey sour, showing once again how a single cocktail can be very non-linear family origins.
