Amaretto Sour (Classic)

The original amaretto sour with just two ingredients: amaretto and lemon juice

Ingredients

  • 3 ½ ozamaretto
  • 1lemon (juiced)

Method

  1. Add amaretto and freshly squeezed lemon juice to shaker with ice and shake hard until very cold.
  2. Double strain into rocks glass filled with ice
  3. Drop a skewer of 2 maraschino red cherries into the drink and allow the syrup on the cherries to mix with the cocktail
  4. Optionally, add 2-3 ounces of club soda to top the drink and add a fizzy nature to it

History

The original amaretto sour did not have the bourbon added - that came later when prepackaged sour mixes came to ease the ingredient prep burden on busy bars. These sour mixes had added sugars to them, which accentuated the sweetness of the cocktail when mixed with the already sweet-tart amaretto liqueur, so bartenders balanced out the saccharine-like flavor by adding bourbon. But now we don't need to use such sour mixes, so the classic recipe can easily be made at home. The recipe below was derived from my time visitng a busy dive bar in Washington D.C. I really liked their amaretto sours so I watched them make it and after experimenting at home, this is the recipe I've found that yields pretty consistent results.
