History

The original Amaretto Sour likely came about in the 1970s as a promotional push from liqueur brand Disaronno. Classic sours consist of a base spirit, a syrup or liqueur for sweetness, and fresh lemon or lime juice, but the original Amaretto Sour recipe only required amaretto and lemon juice. Amaretto provided ample sugar to balance the citrus, filling the part of both base spirit and sweetener. However, when prepackaged sour mix became prevalent in the '90s, the sugar in those mixes began super-saturating the Amaretto sour, making the drink sickly sweet. The modern recipe provided here combines bourbon, almond-flavored amaretto liqueur, simple syrup, fresh lemon juice, and egg white.
